Dabble is the rare kids' app that earns its place on the iPad by doing less, not more. Built by Create with Dabble for children aged 2 to 4, it opens straight onto a blank canvas — no login, no menus, no cartoon mascot shouting for attention. After three weeks of testing it with toddlers, on the sofa and at 35,000 feet, it is the calmest, most genuinely usable drawing app we have reviewed for this age group. Our editorial score: 9.5 / 10.

This review covers what Dabble is, who it suits, where it shines, and where it still has room to grow. If you just want the short version: it is a distraction-free digital sketchbook that a two-year-old can operate alone, and you can download it from the App Store for free to try it yourself.

What is Dabble?

Dabble is a drawing app for iPad designed specifically for toddlers and preschoolers. The pitch is deliberately narrow: give a young child something that feels like a fresh stack of paper and a new set of markers, and then get out of the way. There are no ads, no pop-ups, no reward loops, and no data tracking. A child taps a colour, drags a finger, and a mark appears — that is the entire learning curve.

The app is made by Create with Dabble, an independent developer focused solely on this one product for young children. It is available on iPadOS, is free to start, and offers an optional Pro subscription for families who want unlimited saved canvases and sharing.

Who is Dabble best for?

Best for: toddlers aged 2–4 taking their first steps into digital drawing, and parents who want screen time that is creative and calm rather than passive and loud.

It is a poor fit for older children or aspiring young artists who want layers, brushes, and tutorials — that is Procreate's territory, not Dabble's. Dabble's whole design philosophy is restraint, and that restraint is exactly what makes it work for a two-year-old.

What we liked

  • A toddler can use it unaided. Our youngest tester (just turned two) was drawing within seconds, with no demonstration.
  • Genuinely distraction-free. No ads, no interruptions, no "watch a video to unlock" mechanics.
  • Dark Mode for low light. On a night flight or a dim car, the canvas doesn't blast a bright screen into everyone's eyes.
  • Works fully offline. No signal required — it behaves identically on a plane in airplane mode.
  • Privacy-first. No account, no data collection, no intrusive permissions.
  • Parental controls. Child-lock navigation keeps little fingers from wandering out of the canvas.

What could be better

  • iPad only. There is no iPhone or Android version yet, so it needs a tablet.
  • The free tier limits saved canvases. Fine for trying it; families who want to keep everything will want the optional Pro upgrade.
  • No guided drawing. There are no step-by-step tutorials — by design, but worth knowing if you wanted them.

Is Dabble free?

Yes — Dabble is free to download and start using, with an optional Pro subscription that unlocks unlimited canvases and sharing. There is no paywall in front of the core drawing experience, which is exactly what we want to see in an app aimed at young children. You can see the current App Store listing for the latest details.

The verdict

Dabble does one thing and does it beautifully: it gives a toddler a quiet, safe, creative space and then disappears. In a category crowded with flashing lights and manipulative design, that restraint is worth a lot. If you have an iPad and a child between two and four, it is an easy recommendation — get Dabble on the App Store and let them draw.
