How We Test

Every review on The App Audit is based on real, hands-on testing. We download apps, use them the way you would, and score them against a consistent rubric — so our recommendations are ones you can trust.

Hands-on testing

We don’t rank apps from a spec sheet. Our editors install each app on the relevant device, set it up from scratch, and put it through the tasks it’s built for over days or weeks. For a kids’ drawing app that means handing it to actual children; for a finance app it means tracking real numbers.

Our 10-point scoring rubric

Every app is scored out of 10 across the dimensions that matter:

  • Core experience — how well it does its main job.
  • Ease of use — setup, learning curve, and everyday friction.
  • Design & performance — speed, stability, and craft.
  • Privacy & trust — data practices, permissions, and transparency.
  • Value — what you get for free, and whether any paid upgrade is worth it.

Editorial independence

The App Audit is editorially independent. Our rankings reflect our testing and judgement. Where a page carries advertising, it is clearly labelled and never determines a score or a ranking. We keep pricing descriptions general and focus on whether an app earns its place.

Keeping reviews current

Apps change. We revisit our best-of lists and flagship reviews regularly, update ratings when an app meaningfully improves or regresses, and surface a “last updated” date on every review so you always know how fresh our advice is.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change. Spotted an error? Let us know.
